Before You Start – Identify Your Blind Type
The fix depends on which operating system your blind uses.
Chain-operated roller blinds have a looped chain on one side that drives an internal clutch mechanism. The chain pulls the clutch which turns the roller tube. Problems with these blinds are usually either chain or clutch related.
Cordless spring-tensioned roller blinds have no chain. A coiled spring inside the roller tube holds tension. You lift the bottom rail to lower and release – the spring does the rolling up. Problems with these are almost always spring tension related.
Motorized roller blinds – if the motor is running but the blind is not moving, the issue is usually the clutch or a physical obstruction. If the motor is not running at all, check the power source and remote batteries before assuming a mechanical fault.
Problem 1 – Blind Won’t Roll Up or Rolls Up Very Slowly
Cause: Spring tension is too loose. The internal spring has lost enough tension that it cannot pull the fabric weight back up the tube.
This is the most common roller blind complaint and it happens gradually – the blind gets slower and slower until one day it stops retracting entirely.

- Lower the blind to approximately halfway down the window.
- Remove the blind from its brackets.
- By hand, roll the fabric back up onto the roller tube as evenly as possible – keep the edges straight and the tension consistent across the full width.
- Rehang the blind and test. The manual rolling has wound the spring and added tension.
- If the blind is still too slow, repeat the process – lower to halfway, remove, roll up by hand, rehang. Each repetition adds more spring tension.
Fix for chain-operated blinds that roll slowly: Lower the blind fully and check that the chain is seated correctly in the clutch mechanism on the headrail. A chain that has slipped slightly to one side of the clutch creates friction that slows operation. Reseat the chain so it runs centrally through the clutch body.

Problem 2 – Blind Rolls Up Too Fast or Snaps Up Violently
Cause: Spring tension is too tight. The spring has more energy than needed for the fabric weight and launches the blind upward when released.
This is the opposite problem to Problem 1 – usually happens on a new blind or after the previous fix has been overdone.
Fix:
- Lower the blind to approximately halfway down.
- Remove from the brackets.
- By hand, unroll the fabric downward – do this carefully and steadily. You are releasing tension from the spring by allowing it to partially uncoil.
- Roll the fabric down by about one full rotation.
- Rehang and test. If still too fast, repeat.

Cause: Spring tension is too tight for the holding mechanism, or the clutch is not engaging properly.
Fix for spring-tensioned blinds: Follow the tension-release steps in Problem 2. The spring is overpowering the hold position.
Fix for chain-operated blinds: The clutch mechanism – the component the chain drives – is not locking the fabric in position when the chain is released. This is a worn clutch. The chain-pull action should lock the fabric at any height. If the fabric slides down after you release the chain, the clutch is slipping.
Try pulling the chain slightly more sharply when lowering to the desired position – a crisp pull seats the clutch more firmly. If the blind still will not hold, the clutch unit needs replacement.
Problem 4 – Chain Slips, Spins Freely, or Won’t Turn the Blind
Cause: Worn chain, worn clutch, or chain has jumped off the sprocket inside the mechanism.
Diagnose: Pull the chain. If you feel resistance and the tube moves: the chain and clutch are working – look elsewhere for the problem. If the chain pulls freely with no resistance and the tube does not move: the clutch is stripped or the chain has slipped off the internal sprocket.
Fix – chain slipped off sprocket: Remove the clutch mechanism from the roller tube end. The chain feeds through a channel inside the clutch body around a small sprocket wheel. Manually reseat the chain around the sprocket and reinstall the clutch.
Fix – worn clutch: The clutch mechanism is a replaceable component. Identify the tube diameter of your blind (typically 25mm, 32mm, or 38mm), purchase a matching replacement clutch, and swap it out. The old clutch pulls out of the tube end and the new one pushes in – no tools required on most roller blind systems.
Fix – worn or kinked chain: A chain that has stretched, has broken links, or has kinks will not feed smoothly through the clutch. Chain loops are inexpensive and available in standard lengths. Measure your existing chain loop length before ordering a replacement.
Problem 5 – Fabric is Rolling Up Crooked or Jamming

Cause: The fabric has come off-centre on the roller tube. When the fabric is not aligned straight with the tube, it skews as it rolls – one edge rolls tighter than the other, eventually jamming the mechanism.
This usually develops gradually – the blind gets harder to operate, the chain feels stiff, and the fabric edges start to look uneven and worn.
Fix:
- Lower the blind fully. Remove from brackets.
- Roll the fabric completely off the roller tube by hand until you have a flat length of fabric.
- Inspect the fabric edge along the full length. If it has started fraying or folding at one edge, that is where the misalignment began.
- Re-roll the fabric onto the tube carefully, keeping it perfectly centred and the edges even. Roll slowly and check alignment after every two or three turns.
- Rehang and test. The blind should now roll smoothly.
Prevention: The main cause of fabric misalignment is operating the blind by grabbing the fabric rather than using the bottom rail or pull cord. Always operate from the bottom rail.
Problem 6 – Blind Fell Out of Brackets or Won’t Stay in Brackets
Cause: Brackets are too far apart, bracket screws have loosened in the wall, or the safety clamp has broken.
Fix – brackets too far apart: The headrail should sit snugly in both brackets. If there is sideways play, the brackets need to be moved closer together. Unscrew one bracket, move it inward by 5-10mm, and rescrew. The headrail spring pin compresses to fit – it needs the brackets close enough to hold it firmly.
Fix – loose bracket screws: If the bracket is pulling away from the wall or window frame, the screws have lost grip in the substrate. Remove the screws, insert wall plugs or wooden toothpicks with wood glue into the holes, let dry, and rescrew.
Fix – broken safety clamp: The safety clamp is a small plastic clip that prevents the headrail from tipping forward out of the bracket. If it has broken, the headrail can fall out during operation. Replacement clamps are available from blind suppliers and clip onto the headrail end.
Problem 7 – Roller Blind is Hard to Pull Down or Feels Very Stiff

Repair is worth it if: The fabric is in good condition and only the mechanism has failed. Clutch units, chain loops, and brackets are inexpensive and easy to source.
Replace the blind if:
- The fabric has permanent creases, tears, or the blackout backing is delaminating
- The roller tube is bent or warped
