What are Honeycomb Blinds?

Honeycomb blinds – also called cellular shades or cellular blinds – are built with hollow hexagonal cells running horizontally across the full width of the blind. When the blind is lowered, those cells trap warm air between the cold glass and your room. That trapped air is the insulation. The same principle as double-glazed windows: the air gap does the insulating, not the material itself. No other common blind type creates this. Roller blinds, zebra blinds, venetian blinds – they are all single flat surfaces. Honeycomb cellular shades are the only type with a genuine thermal barrier.

Range of innovative operating mechanisms:

Cell Type - Single, Double or Triple

The number of cell layers stacked together determines how much air is trapped and therefore how much insulation the blind provides. Single-cell is not the right recommendation for Edmonton. Double-cell is our standard recommendation for most Edmonton rooms – living rooms, bedrooms, home offices. Triple-cell is the correct choice for north-facing windows that receive no direct sun in winter. We recommend the appropriate cell type per window during the free consultation, not a single answer for the whole house

Fabric Opacity

Blackout fabric blocks light completely – right for Edmonton bedrooms against the 5 AM July sunrise. For complete blackout combined with an outside mount that eliminates light gaps, see our guide to blackout blinds in Edmonton. Light-filtering fabric softens daylight while keeping the room bright – suited to living rooms and home offices. Sheer fabric allows the most light through while providing daytime privacy from street level. We bring samples of all three to your home so you see the exact result in your actual room before deciding.

Operating Systems

Cordless lift raises and lowers from the bottom rail directly – no cords, safest for homes with children or pets. Top-down/bottom-up allows you to lower from the top of the window independently – light enters from above while privacy is maintained at street level, useful for street-facing bedrooms. Motorized operation is available across all cell types and fabrics, compatible with remote control, wall switch, timer, Alexa, and Google Home.

Mounting

Inside mount seats the blind within the window recess for a flush appearance. Outside mount covers the full window frame and is the right choice for shallow windows. For honeycomb blinds specifically, a correctly fitted mount matters – gaps at the sides reduce insulation performance. Our team assesses the correct mount for each window on-site.

Which Rooms Are Honeycomb Blinds Right For?

Bedroom – Yes

Blackout honeycomb blinds solve both Edmonton bedroom problems at once. The 5 AM July sunrise and the cold north-facing window in January. Blackout fabric handles the light. The cellular structure handles the heat loss. Top-down/bottom-up is useful in street-facing bedrooms – light from above, closed for privacy at street level.

Living Room – Yes

Double-cell light-filtering honeycomb blinds suit most Edmonton living rooms. The insulation benefit compounds across seven months of winter. If the living room faces west or south, the same blind that insulates in winter also reduces solar heat gain during Edmonton’s long summer afternoons.

North-Facing Windows – Yes, Triple Cell

North-facing windows in Edmonton get no direct sun all winter. They are your biggest heat loss points. Triple-cell honeycomb blinds on north-facing windows make the most measurable difference to room temperature and heating costs.

Kitchens and Bathrooms – No

The hollow cellular structure absorbs moisture from steam and humidity and does not dry easily. Daily steam from cooking or showering causes mould inside the cells that cannot be cleaned out. Use moisture-resistant roller blinds in kitchens and bathrooms. We will tell you this during the consultation rather than sell you the wrong product for the room.

FAQs

More so than in most Canadian cities. Edmonton’s heating season runs October to April – seven months. Every night you close a double or triple cell honeycomb blind you are adding an insulating layer that a standard blind cannot provide. That compounds across seven months every winter for the 7 to 10 year lifespan of the blind. Payback on the extra cost typically comes within the first two to three heating seasons. We cover this in full detail in are honeycomb blinds worth it?

The number of hexagonal cell layers stacked inside the blind. Single-cell has one layer – not the right choice for Edmonton winters. Double-cell stacks two layers and is our standard recommendation for most rooms. Triple-cell stacks three layers for maximum insulation – the correct choice for north-facing windows and rooms where heat retention is the top priority.

No. The hollow cellular structure absorbs moisture from steam and cannot dry easily. This causes mould inside the cells that cannot be cleaned out. Moisture-resistant roller blinds are the correct choice for kitchens and bathrooms – built for high-humidity rooms, they wipe clean with a damp cloth and resist mould.

Annual vacuuming with a soft brush attachment on low suction – gently across the face of the cells. Do not use water or cleaning solutions. Moisture inside the cellular structure is difficult to dry and causes fabric deterioration over time. We cover the full process in how to clean honeycomb blinds. If you ever need to take the blind down for cleaning or replacement, see how to remove honeycomb blinds.
